Virginia was founded in 1836 by Dr. Henry Hall. The township is situated at the crossroads of routes 125 and 78 in the heart of Cass County.
Virginia is blessed with a good water supply and the beautiful Jennie Marr Dunaway Memorial Park with its pool, ball diamonds, tennis court, walking path and park pavilion. Along the park is the Rexroat Prairie (prairie grass and wildflowers) and authentic log cabins. Virginia is a mere 5 minutes west of the 16,500 acre Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area, one of the state’s largest and most beautiful natural settings. It offers fishing, hiking, biking, wildlife viewing, horseback riding, hunting and camping. The town offers restaurants, groceries, shops and fuel to the many visitors.
During the year there are varied events in which citizens and visitors may participate. The city wide garage sales take place the first Saturday in May and also in October; the Virginia BBQ is the first weekend of June; Labor Day marks the annual ice cream social; and Log Cabin Days are in October along with Halloween at the Log Cabin. Additionally, events include Christmas in Virginia, Log Cabin Christmas and the Christmas parade the first weekend in December.
Virginia welcomes new businesses and new citizens. The town is located 15 minutes from Beardstown, 20 minutes from Jacksonville and 45 minutes from the heart of Springfield. Virginia is governed by a Mayor and six Council Members who are open minded to all progress. The Volunteer Fire Department, the Police Department and the Public Works Department are considered among the finest.
